Yes, it is stable and mature. Of course it is not so blown with features like Oracle or DB2, but it also does not require so much computing power as them. I personally choosed it because it has namespaces (schemas), table inheritance, array data types and strict data handling (it will not allow you to store malformed data in tables).
It is not a single file database - it is a server based, not client based database.
