When a thoroughly unpleasant American woman dies during a trip to the Holy Land, no one mourns her. Yet she may well have been murdered by one of her subservient family members, so Hercule Poirot is called in to resolve the case. Hugh Fraser does a serviceable job with this early and rather stilted Christie offering. The many characters are identifiable and, for the most part, believable. This includes a wide range of Brits, Americans, and Jordanians. Fraser's pacing is somewhat sleepy, though, and several of the characters sound wooden. It's not clear whether this is due to the stiff writing or the narration. All in all, an entertaining listen for die-hard Christie-lovers.

A tyrannical old martinet, a mental sadist and the incarnation of evil. These were only three of the character descriptions levelled at Mrs. Boynton, the matriarch who kept her family totally dependent on her. But did she really deserve to die on the excursion to beautiful Petra? Hercule Poirot hears about the murder and feels compelled to investigate-despite the family's request not to do so. Do they have something to hide and, if so, can they keep it hidden from this master sleuth? --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Внимание! Книга на английском языке, описание, соответственно, тоже.

An exhaustive, soul-searching memoir, Bill Clinton's My Life is a refreshingly candid look at the former president as a son, brother, teacher, father, husband, and public figure. Clinton painstakingly outlines the history behind his greatest successes and failures, including his dedication to educational and economic reform, his war against a "vast right-wing operation" determined to destroy him, and the "morally indefensible" acts for which he was nearly impeached. My Life is autobiography as therapy--a personal history written by a man trying to face and banish his private demons.

Clinton approaches the story of his youth with gusto, sharing tales of giant watermelons, nine-pound tumors, a charging ram, famous mobsters and jazz musicians, and a BB gun standoff. He offers an equally energetic portrait of American history, pop culture, and the evolving political landscape, covering the historical events that shaped his early years (namely the deaths of Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK) and the events that shaped his presidency (Waco, Bosnia, Somalia). What makes My Life remarkable as a political memoir is how thoroughly it is infused with Clinton's unassuming, charmingly pithy voice:

I learned a lot from the stories my uncle, aunts, and grandparents told me: that no one is perfect but most people are good; that people can't be judged only by their worst or weakest moments; that harsh judgments can make hypocrites of us all; that a lot of life is just showing up and hanging on; that laughter is often the best, and sometimes the only, response to pain.
However, that same voice might tire readers as Clinton applies his penchant for minute details to a distractible laundry list of events, from his youth through the years of his presidency. Not wanting to forget a single detail that might help account for his actions, Clinton overdoes it--do we really need to know the name of his childhood barber? But when Clinton sticks to the meat of his story--recollections about Mother, his abusive stepfather, Hillary, the campaign trail, and Kenneth Starr--the veracity of emotion and Kitchen Confidential-type revelations about "what it is like to be President" make My Life impossible to put down.

Book Description
'When we are happy, we are always good', says Lord Henry, 'but when we are good, we are not always happy.'
Lord Henry's lazy, clever words lead the young Dorian Gray into a world where it is better to be beautiful than to be good; a world where anything can be forgiven - even murder - if it can make people laugh at a dinner party.

When "The Picture of Dorian Gray" was first published in 1891, it evoked a tremendous amount of hostile criticism, in most part due to its immoral content. Oscar Wilde was identified with the "art for art's sake" movement of the nineteenth century which did not subordinate art to ethical instruction. However, this novel is indeed a morality tale about the hazards of egotistical self-indulgence. "If it were I," exclaims Dorian, "who were always to be young and that picture was to grow old...I would give my soul for that." With that spoken, the tale of this young hero of amazing beauty, Dorian Gray, begins. His pact with evil allows his portrait to take on his many sins and degradations while his physical appearance remains youthful. Over the years as he becomes cruel and vicious, even murderous, Dorian's young and perfect body is no longer enough to salvage his deteriorating mind and morality.

внимание, книга на английском языке!

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

The hobbit-hole in question belongs to one Bilbo Baggins, an upstanding member of a "little people, about half our height, and smaller than the bearded dwarves." He is, like most of his kind, well off, well fed, and best pleased when sitting by his own fire with a pipe, a glass of good beer, and a meal to look forward to. Certainly this particular hobbit is the last person one would expect to see set off on a hazardous journey; indeed, when Gandalf the Grey stops by one morning, "looking for someone to share in an adventure," Baggins fervently wishes the wizard elsewhere. No such luck, however; soon 13 fortune-seeking dwarves have arrived on the hobbit's doorstep in search of a burglar, and before he can even grab his hat or an umbrella, Bilbo Baggins is swept out his door and into a dangerous adventure.

The dwarves' goal is to return to their ancestral home in the Lonely Mountains and reclaim a stolen fortune from the dragon Smaug. Along the way, they and their reluctant companion meet giant spiders, hostile elves, ravening wolves--and, most perilous of all, a subterranean creature named Gollum from whom Bilbo wins a magical ring in a riddling contest. It is from this life-or-death game in the dark that J.R.R. Tolkien's masterwork, The Lord of the Rings, would eventually spring. Though The Hobbit is lighter in tone than the trilogy that follows, it has, like Bilbo Baggins himself, unexpected iron at its core. Don't be fooled by its fairy-tale demeanor; this is very much a story for adults, though older children will enjoy it, too. By the time Bilbo returns to his comfortable hobbit-hole, he is a different person altogether, well primed for the bigger adventures to come--and so is the reader. --Alix Wilber --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Внимание, книга на английском языке!

To the very few officials who ever saw the package of documents which arrived anonymously at the Ministry of Justice in Bonn in 1964, the list of names therein became known as "The Odessa File". Journalist, Peter Miller, vows to hunt down and expose the SS killers under the Odessa's protection.

Frederick Forsyth's extraordinary way of writing spellbinding novels may be the natural outgrowth of a vigorously adventuresome and unusually challenging career in international investigative journalism. Written in hotels in Austria and Germany during the fall of 1971,THE ODESSA FILE is based on its author's life experiences as a Reuters man reporting from London, Paris, and East Berlin in the early 1960s.

The Odessa of this title is not a city in Russia or a town in Texas but an acronym for the secret organization which has, with a large measure of success, protected the identities and advanced the destinies of former members of Hitler's dreaded SS in and out of Germany since shortly before the end of World War II. One of the rare major defeats it has suffered came in the spring of 1964, when a packet of dossiers arrived anonymously at the Ministry of Justice in Bonn. How and why a once carefree young German free-lance journalist named Peter Miller came to send the packet is told in this brilliant new extrapolation from reality into terror.

Внимание, книга на английском языке!

In a remote corner of Zangaro, a small republic in Africa, lies Crystal Mountain. At certain times of the day the mountain emits a strange glow. Only Sir James Manson knows why. The mountain contains ten billion dollar's worth of the world's most valuable mineral, platinum. Now the only question is, how to get hold of it. Sir James knows how. Invade the country with a band of savage, cold-blooded mercenaries. Topple the government and set up a puppet dictatorship. Unleash the dogs of war. "A super thriller. . .as instantly enthralling as the Day of the Jackal."

"Knocking off a bank or an armored truck is merely crude. Knocking off an entire republic has, I feel, a certain style." So says mining magnate Sir JamesManson, a shadowy titan of the City (London's financial district) who schemes a coup d'Ttat in Zangaro, a small West African dictatorship where a secret source of platinum lies waiting to be exploited. If the goal is clear, the means are not, for there are no up-to-date manuals on overthrowing governments by force. By the time he has set forth this sinister venture in all its ramifications, Frederick Forsyth has fashioned that manual and given us a classic of terror and enthrallment.

The man selected to plan and carry out the sack of Zangaro is Cat Shannon, an Anglo-Irishman, aged thirty-three, late of Nigeria and the Congo. There is a deadly parallel about the ways Sir James and Cat set about their tasks: one shuttling between London and Zurich, manipulating currencies and stocks and using all the shady ploys of international finance; the other ranging all over Europe, hiring his small force of fellow ex-mercs, buying and shipping arms under false colors, moving his mini-army south against a hundred-day deadline, and planning the final blow with a brilliant precision that does not allow for the tiniest slip of timing or tactics.

An adventure thriller in which an anonymous Englishman who in the spring of 1963, was hired by Colonel Marc Rodin, Operations Chief of the OAS to assassinate General De Gaulle.

France, infuriated by Charles de Gaulle's withdrawal from Algeria, had failed in six known attempts to assassinate the General. This book assumes that the seventh, most deadly, attempt involved a professional killer-for-hire who would be unknown to the French police. The code name of this killer: Jackal. His price: half a million dollars. His demand: total secrecy, even from his employers.

Step by painstaking step we follow the Jackal in his meticulous planning, from the fashioning of a collapsible but powerful rifle, the theft of passports, the forging of documents, the devising of alternate identities, to the laying out of his maze-like approach to the time and the place where the General is to meet the Jackal's specially-made bullet.

Though he cannot know it, the main obstacle standing athwart his path is a small, diffident, and rumpled policeman, Deputy Commissaire Claude Lebel. Lebel's boss considers him the best detective in France, but he himself cannot feel much confidence as he begins to track down a killer he knows exists but whose plans and identity are-a blank. Deliberately, with round-the-clock assistance from police all over Europe and in London and America, Lebel pieces together the Jackal's image. As the last second approaches, when the Jackal's crosshairs come to rest on that unmistakable profile, it is all the listener can do not to cry out in warning.
