Sam Mangwana

Sam Mangwana is one of the most innovative, inventive and versatile musicians in the history of Congolese music. He has succesfully experimented with several diverse musical genres such as rumba, soukous, salsa and afro-beat. Nicknamed La Pigeon Voyageur for his nomadic tendencies, Mangwana played for both TP OK Jazz and Afrisa International, the two greatest musical groups in the Congo.

He was born in Kinshasa in 1945 of Angolan parents. While still a 17 year old, He was able to impress Tabu Ley enough for Tabu Ley to ask him to join his band, then known as African Fiesta. There he played alongside Tabu Ley , Dr Nico Kasanda and Roger Izeidi, three of Zaire's most prominent musicians. When the band split, he joined Tabu Ley's faction called Africa Fiesta Nationale.

Following a disagreement with fellow band members, Sam mangwana left. In 1972 , he teamed up with singer Ntesa Dalienst and guitarists Dizzy Madjeku and Mavatiku Visi (Michelino) to form a band called Festival Des Maquisards. This band turned out to be one of Zaire's most popular bands in the early to mid seventies, giving TP OK Jazz a run for their money. In 1975 he joined Franco's TP OK Jazz. It was here that he produced some of his most memorable hits including Luka Mobali Moko. . He also provided superb vocals on some of Ok Jazz' s greatest hits including Simaro's Mabele and Ebale . In order to comply with President Mobutu's call for authenticity, He briefly changed his name to Mangwana Mayimona. He rejoined Tabu Ley's band now renamed Afrisa International before leaving for the Ivory Coast. That he was able to play for both Afrisa and OK jazz succefully is a testament to his versatility given that the two bands were from very different schools of music.

Upon arriving in the Ivory Coast in the late seventies, He joined with Lokassa Ya Mbongo,Theo Blaise Kounkou, Dizzy Madjeku and Ringo Moya to form a group they named African All stars and later Les Quatre Etoiles. Here he succsesfully experimented with West African rhythms such as Highlife and Afrobeat. The fusion of Congolese and West African beats was a big hit in West Africa and sales of the bands albums reached record levels, notably the album, Georgette Eckins , which officially launched Sam Mangwana a true Pan African star. Following hot on the heels of that album, was another Mangwana classic named Suzana Coulibaly. Mangwana dubbed his new beat , Soukous Sophistique . By 1980 however, the band had come apart following disagreements among the members.

In 1982 , He collaborated with Franco on the album Cooperation which turned out to be one of the most popular albums of the early eighties. In the album , He joined Franco in singing lead vocals in all the songs , notably Odongo, a song about an East African trader, and Simaro's composition, Faute ya Commercante .But it was the setimental , romantic song , Zala Sportif , a composition of his that carried the album

Perhaps his most memorable album was the 1989 coopration with Franco labelled Forever which also turned out to be Franco's last album. The lead song in that album featured Kiswahili vocals from both franco and Sam Mangwana.

In 1991 , He toured the US with former compatriots at The African All stars. After a brief stint with the All stars, Sam Mangwana launched a solo career in Paris. He released several popular hits such as Maria Tebbo. He has toured the continent extensively. He was one of the star attractions at the Hommage du Franco concert held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Franco's death.

Besides experimenting with various musical genres, Sam Mangwana has sung in several different languages including Lingala, Kiswahili, Kikongo, French, Poturguese and English. While focusing mainly on love songs , He has also sung songs that raise political and environmental awareness.

Jane Mangini is a Florida native, and studied at Berklee in Boston. In addition to touring with Trans Siberian Ochestra for the past few years, Jane has recorded 2 records and played with New England favorite, Rick Berlin. Jane now lives in NYC, and works as a sound designer/composer for Bang Music.

Jane improvises chordal and solo structures on her keyboards and then experiments with various arrangements. "The arranging part is easy," she explains. "I slice up my own work and use various chunks. Then I experiment with lots of samples. Sometimes I’ll play the samples in other octaves to get a different feel. I even create some tunes based on a strange-sounding sample that I then write around." When Al adds his parts, Jane then changes the arrangements again. "I hone in on what I want the tune to sound like. I start quick, then leave a piece alone. When I come back to it, I usually hear something new."

A classically trained musician, Al Pitrelli has made his mark in the rock world performing with heavy metal groups like Megadeth and Savatage. He also worked with Alice Cooper, Asia and Dee Snider’s group Widowmaker. Al says he plays rock for a living but finds the O’2L setting an "outlet to perfect the art form, to use an acoustic guitar or mandolin if a song calls for it." He jokes that you couldn’t ask for two collaborators to come from more opposite worlds. "Jane is a great musician and composer as well as the Mozart of Madison Avenue," he says, then adds with a laugh, "and here she is recording an album with a spawn-of-Satan guitar player."

The sound of their sophomore album,Doyle's Brunch , is as tricky to pigeonhole and just as audibly accomplished at its creators. These thirteen instrumental cuts effortlessly incorporate elements of jazz, blues, rock, and contemporary electronica, yielding results comparable to peers such as Saint Germain , Deep Forest , and Enigma , as well as Hollywood composer/arrangers like Craig Armstrong ( Romeo + Juliet , Massive Attack ) and David Arnold (the James Bond franchise, Bjцrk ).

Both Jane (who also produced Doyle's Brunch ) and Al have a knack for playing intuitively. "Jane sits down at the piano, and plays like a 90-year old black man", opines her husband. For his part, Al credits his 2000 to 2002 service with metal hellions Megadeth for honing his gift for working quickly, and from the gut. "Dave Mustaine has a similar work ethic to my wife," he says. "They're both perfectionists, and they both want it done immediately." You can hear that freshness in the music; despite all its careful craftsmanship, the compositions of O'2L never sound too-slick or overproduced. Like its title suggests, Doyle's Brunch is warm, rich, nourishing and bound to keep fans coming back to enjoy additional helpings of its fine fare.

Mina, byname of Mina Anna Mazzini (March 25, 1940, Busto Arsizio, Province of Varese), is an Italian singer. She lives in Switzerland.
Although born in a small town of Lombardy, she grew up in Cremona city: whence her nickname of "Cremona Tiger" gave her by her friend, the journalist Natalia Aspesi.
She began her career singing pop songs with a "jazzy" feel in the late 1950s. Her first stage name used to be Baby Gate. After a 1958 concert at La Bussola, a nightclub on the Versilia famous for hosting artists such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, she became a national star in Italy. Her first television appearance was in 1959. In the following two years she took part to the Sanremo Music Festival.
In 1963 her TV and radio career for Rai was stopped, as she refused to hide the fact she was pregnant (she had a relationship with actor Corrado Pani, who was married with Renata Monteduro). However, her unscathed appeal with the audience later moved Rai's functionaries to recall her back. Mina subsequently appeared in numerous TV shows, mostly as a hostess, during the late 1960s and the 1970s. Mina gained also wide popularity abroad, singing also in French, German, Turkish and Japanese. In 1966 she moved her residence to Lugano, Switzerland, obtaining Swiss citizenship in 1989.

Her most famous songs were written by the prolific duo Mogol (lyricist)-Battisti. It was Lucio Battisti who wrote the music for many of her hits including, "Amor Mio", "Io e te da soli" and "Insieme".
Mina's voice has been considered by many as one of, if not the best never heard in Italian pop music.
After retiring from public appearances in the late 1978 she continues to release albums on a yearly basis, usually featuring on the top 10 charts in Italy with the new single releases. Recent releases include duets with Fabrizio de André and Adriano Celentano.

Peter Malick Group feat. Norah Jones (3 Albums)

Прекрасный тандем: блюзовый гитарист Питер Малик (Peter Malick), чьи лучшие деньки миновали в 70х, и молодое дарование - Нора Джонс, дочка Рави Шанкара, дебютный альбом которой ""Come Away With Me"" собрал урожай из 8 премий Grammy.

Правда, здесь кроется прелюбопытная история: дело в том, что первый совместный альбом Норы и Питера, "New York City", был записан ДО "золотого" сольника Норы, когда дебютантка только переехала в Нью-Йорк. Диск не нашел своего издателя - он был выпущен ничтожным тиражом на независимом лейбле. И пылился бы на полках до сих пор, если б не указанные 8 граммофонов. Более того: "The Chill Album" - ни что иное, как сборник... ремиксов на тот первый альбом. Редкий случай, когда исходный материал остается в тени вторичного продукта.
В новой версии от DJ Strobe композиции стали отчетливо танцевальными, сохранив, тем не менее, хрипловатый шарм, роднящий Нору с "большими соул-певицами". Заглавная композиция "New York City" избавилась от своего мрачного подтекста и засияла огнями неоновых высесок модных клубов. "Deceptively Yours" приобрела дополнительные оттенки за счет легких перкуссий и электронных эфектов.
Самые значительные изменения претерпела "Things You Don't Have to Do", из которой практически вынута блюзовая основа. Получилось довольно размеренно, танцевально и... попсово. Как бы ни уверяла нас Нора в том, что интересы фирмы грамзаписи не влияют на ее музыку, достаточно сравнить эту песню с ее исходной версией, чтобы подтвердить догадки о разрушительном влиянии капитала на талант.

В этом голосе вы не узнаете певицу Нору Джонс. В этой музыке не узнаете блюзмена Питера Малика. Но это они!

Сначала было Слово! В описываемом случае у истоков истории был побег прилежной молодой пианистки, ученицы Школы исполнительства и изобразительных искусств в Далласе из-под родительского крыла. Ныне всем известная Нора Джонс – американская дочь легендарного Рави Шанкара, самовольно уехала на каникулы из родного Техаса в Нью-Йорк: выступала в кафе и клубах, знакомилась с музыкантами… До подписания контракта с главным джазовым лейблом мира Blue Note оставалось около полутора лет…

В одном из клубов Нора встретила Питера Малика, нью-йоркского клубного музыканта, одного из тысяч никогда не прорывающихся к большой славе, выпускающих пластинки на крошечных лейблах, продающих диски на своих концертах. Он играл блюз с подросткового возраста. Получив свою порцию известности в 60-е годы, в 90-е Малик покинул музыкальный бизнес. Встреча с Норой была его шансом на триумфальное возвращение…

После знакомства с юной Норой Джонс, Питер Малик решился, как оказалось, на беспроигрышный проект -- The Peter Malick Group feat Norah Jones. В маленькой студии в рекордно короткие сроки они записали пять песен. (Кроме Норы в записи в качестве вокалистки приняла участие дочь Малика – Мерси). Сыроватость и спешность записи вполне искупила энергетика и мелодичность. В итоге получилась отличная пластинка New York City, посвященная трагедии 11 сентября.

Происходило все это в 2000-ом году. А в начале 2001 года, вскоре после работы с Маликом, Нора Джонс заключила контракт с джаз-лейблом Blue Note. Материал записи Норы и Питера Малика пролежал три года, и только в 2003 году, после затяжной битвы с юристами Blue Note, диск вышел на независимом лейбле. В официальной дискографии Норы Джонс этот альбом до сих пор не значится...

Между тем, вышедший альбом был настолько тепло принят публикой и критиками, что в 2004 году последовал выпуск диска ремиксов (New York City. The Remix Album), а в октябре 2005 вышел в свет и данный The Chill Album, на котором все те же 6 композиций предстали в обработке ди-джеев (причем заглавная New York City и Deceptively Yours -- в двух версиях). Теперь это танцевальные миксы! DJ Strobe, поработавший над ремикшированием, четко показал, как надо делать хорошую коммерческую танцевальную музыку из неформатного, казалось бы, блюза. Поскольку на этом диске мало трэков, и потому совсем нет провальных, случайных, думаю, эта запись рискует надолго задержаться в плеерах ценителей совершенно разных стилей.

Blossom Dearie - Blossom Time at Ronnie Scott's

b. 28 April 1928, East Durham, New York, USA. A singer, pianist and songwriter, with a "wispy, little-girlish" voice, Dearie is regarded as one of the great supper club singers. Her father was of Scottish and Irish descent; her mother emigrated from Oslo, Norway. Dearie is said to have been given her unusual first name after a neighbour brought peach blossoms to her house on the day she was born. She began taking piano lessons when she was five, and studied classical music until she was in her teens, when she played in her high school dance band and began to listen to jazz. Early influences included Art Tatum, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Martha Tilton, who sang with the Benny Goodman band. Dearie graduated from high school in the mid-40s and moved to New York City to pursue a music career. She joined the Blue Flames, a vocal group within the Woody Herman big band, and then sang with the Blue Reys, a similar formation in the Alvino Rey band.

In 1952, while working at the Chantilly Club in Greenwich Village, Dearie met Nicole Barclay who, with her husband, owned Barclay Records. At her suggestion she went to Paris and formed a vocal group, the Blue Stars. The group consisted of four male singers/instrumentalists, and four female singers; Dearie contributed many of the arrangements. They had a hit in France and the USA with one of their first recordings, a French version of "Lullaby Of Birdland". While in Paris, Dearie met impresario and record producer Norman Granz, who signed her to Verve Records, for whom she eventually made six solo albums, including the highly regarded My Gentleman Friend.

Unable to take the Blue Stars to the USA because of passport problems (they later evolved into the Swingle Singers), she returned to New York and resumed her solo career, singing to her own piano accompaniment at New York nightclubs such as the Versailles, the Blue Angel and the Village Vanguard. She also appeared on US television with Jack Paar, Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson. In 1966 she made the first of what were to become annual appearances at Ronnie Scott's Club in London, receiving excellent reviews as "a singer's singer", whose most important asset was her power to bring a personal interpretation to a song, while showing the utmost respect for a composer's intentions. In the '60s she also made some albums for Capitol Records, including May I Come In?, a set of standards arranged and conducted by Jack Marshall.

In the early '70s, disillusioned by the major record companies' lack of interest in her kind of music, she started her own company, Daffodil Records, in 1974. Her first album for the label, Blossom Dearie Sings, was followed by a two-record set entitled My New Celebrity Is You, which contained eight of her own compositions. The album's title song was especially written for her by Johnny Mercer, and is said to be the last piece he wrote before his death in 1976. During the '70s Dearie performed at Carnegie Hall with former Count Basie blues singer Joe Williams and jazz vocalist Anita O'Day in a show called The Jazz Singers. In 1981 she appeared with Dave Frishberg for three weeks at Michael's Pub in Manhattan. Frishberg, besides being a songwriter, also sang and played the piano, and Dearie frequently performed his songs, such as "Peel Me A Grape", "I'm Hip" and "My Attorney Bernie". Her own compositions include "I Like You, You're Nice", "I'm Shadowing You" and "Hey John". From 1983, she performed regularly for six months a year at the Ballroom, a nightclub in Manhattan, and in 1985 was the first recipient of the Mabel Mercer Foundation Award, which is presented annually to an outstanding supper-club performer.

Appreciated mostly in New York and London, where she appeared several times in the late '80s/early '90s at the Pizza On The Park, Dearie, with her intimate style and unique voice, remains one of the few survivors of a specialized art.
