“Painted Skin” is the latest screen adaptation of author Pu Song-ling’s Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, a Qing-era collection of supernatural stories previously adapted by numerous Hong Kong filmmakers including King Hu. Unlike most Liao Zhai stories that has a strong spooky element, Director Gordon Chan focus the story on three elements Truth, Beauty and Kindness. When Commander Wang Sheng (Chen Kun) rescued Xiao Wei – a fox spirit in human form (Zhou Xun) from the bandits, he succumbs to her beauty. The infatuation threatens the Commander’s relationship with his wife Pei Rong (Vicki Zhao) who discovers Xiao Wei's true identity and gets the help of martial arts expert Pang Yong (Donnie Yen) to salvage the situation.
Unlike most Liao Zhai stories that has a strong spooky element, Director Gordon Chan focus the story on three elements Truth, Beauty and Kindness. As the story unfolds, it delves into intricate emotions and relationships between man, demon and the moral dilemmas in life. This meant the spooky element was significantly reduced. No complaints though.
Painted Skin boasts a formidable Asian cast with names of Donnie Yen and Zhou Xun who don’t disappoint. Renowned Kung-fu star Donnie Yen was able to prove that he has an acting range, with a charming portrayal of the laidback martial arts expert.
Credit also goes to Zhou Xun for her role as the fox spirit which suited the diminutive actress and also proved why she is one of the best in her business. While audiences will despise her scheming fox spirit role, they will at the same time feel sympathy for the character in her longing for love.
The rest of the cast which included Chen Kun, Vicki Zhao, Sun Li and Qi Yu Wu were passable. Qi however, could have made more effort to add more dimension to his character which had to struggle with his unrequited love towards Xiao Wei.
Except for a draggy love relationship in the middle of the film, which seems to be unavoidable in Asian love stories, the film was paced comfortably.
The film gets a good lift from the twist in the end that will probably leave the audience with a tinge of mixed emotions and reflecting on the nature of love and relationships.

At a teahouse in Edo, Kyoshiro befriends an old man, who turns out to be the finance commissioner for the Shogunate. The old mans desire to do good things for the peasants who suffer from the burden of high taxes brings him into conflict with Princess Takahime, the Shoguns daughter, who cares only for her own pleasures and when he is forced to eliminate her allowance, she marks him for death. NEMURI KYOSHIRO series is unique in the samurai genre in that while it includes plenty of action, it concentrates mostly on character development and solid plotting. Nemuri may be an invincible swordsman, but he's vehemently antiheroic. The story of SWORD OF ADVENTURE is fascinating in its depiction of ancient Japanese politics, and even somewhat radical in that the Finance Commissioner is attempting to take some wealth away from the corrupt ruling warrior-class in order to help the peasants. It also deals with the Japanese concept of racial purity, which is central to Nemuri's character, most memorably in the powerful flashback where Uneme's Western-missionary husband is arrested for preaching Christianity, and as he's being dragged to jail, he picks Nemuri out of a crowd and speaks to him because he recognizes pain and misfortune in Nemuri's face.
In keeping with Nemuri's tortured and rebellious nature, the films also place a strong emphasis on philosophy, as he and other characters often engage in conversations about religion, race, bravery, cowardice, and what it means to be a man or a woman. These discussions are always an intrinsic part of the narrative, and only add to the film's rich texture of exotic physical beauty. As with other films in the series, the cinematic style is also somewhat different from the norm, employing many static shots and long takes instead of quick cutting, even during the duels themselves, and using objects such as trees, walls, and even snow, to split the widescreen frame into sections, creating marvelously expressive compositions.

Итак, я думаю стоит подытожить, какие щас релизы (с переводом) этого долгожданного фильма у нас имеются.

-1- Релиз, который появился самый первый (насколько я знаю) в Инете, без перевода. Ссылки на него разместил участник Melhior здесь, зеркала на него можно увидеть здесь! Перевод в виде субтитров к нему разместил уважаемый участник sudik здесь.
-2- Релиз, который появился на Torrents.Ru, а потом перекочевавший и на другие ресурсы, в частности Binmovie.Ru. Также одна ссылка есть и здесь. Который вследствии появился и в нашей ветке форума благодаря уважаемому модератору Dimella! Перевод уже сделан голосом и о том кто переводил, можно помотреть здесь! Кстати, этот релиз имеет "нестандартный" размер — 1,17 Гб.
-3- Релиз, который полностью повторяет предыдущий, только имеющий более "стандартный" размер — 1,37 Гб. Размещен здесь!
-4- Релиз, который сделал лично Акира с www.hkcinema.ru (т.е. в том числе и перевел). Его нужно покупать, информация о релизе здесь! В Инете я не видел этого размещенного релиза.
