Fergal Keane presents a landmark five-part series charting the history of the island and her people from the earliest days to the present.

Episode 1. Age of Invasions (20 Feb 2011)

This first episode looks at how, far from being a remote island outpost, Ireland was a land targetted by invaders and settlers. Keane exposes the myth of Ireland's Celtic identity, travelling to Norway to learn that the Vikings were resourceful settlers and traders in Ireland rather than the barbarous marauders of popular belief. He also follows the trail of the early Iris monks who brought their literature and learning through Europe to re-energise the Christian world in the early Middle Ages.

Episode 2. Age of Conquest (27 Feb 2011)

Fergal Keane examines the country's invasion by Anglo-Norman forces, revealing how it mirrored huge upheavals taking place across Europe at the same time. He details how these incursions failed to suppress the Gaelic revival in the 14th century, and explores theories that, despite her position as one of England's most celebrated rulers, Elizabeth I was threatened by continental powers that planned to usurp her throne by using Ireland as a back door into her domain.

Episode 3: The Age of Revolution (6 mar 2011)

In this episode, Fergal Keane explores how the influx of Scottish Presbyterians during the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century changed the makeup of the island and her subsequent history. He also examines how the revolutions in America and France paved the way for Ireland's own rebellion in 1798.

Episode 4. Age of Union (13 Mar 2011)

Fergal Keane's journey through Irish history arrives at the 1801 Act of Union, which made Ireland a part of the United Kingdom for the first time. The journalist charts how 19th-century constitutional battles in the Houses of Parliament over Catholic emancipation and land reform laid the foundations for modern Ireland, and tells the story of the campaign for home rule - as well as examining the impact the potato famine of the 1840s had on the country.

Episode 5. Age of Nations (20 Mar 2011)

The dramatic history of Ireland through the 20th century is the subject of this concluding episode of Fergal Keane's series. The War of Independence in the south and the fierce resistance that ensues in the north leads to partition of the island for the first time in its history. Keane charts the developments of the two religiously dominated states , driven by big personalities like Edward Carson and Ian Paisley in the North and Eamonn de Valera and Charles Haughey in the South, up to present-day. He follows Northern Ireland's Troubles and Peace Process and the boom and bust of the Celtic Tiger years in The Republic.
