Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens existed only as recording bands, with the members working regularly in other groups, but they created music that will endure as long as people listen to jazz. The sessions on volume 2 of the Columbia series come from 1926 and 1927, with the first eight tracks continuing the work of the Hot Five and the final eight showing the beginnings of the expanded Hot Seven. The varied sessions demonstrate Armstrong's broadening confidence and musical invention, ranging from the clarion trumpet of "Wild Man Blues" to the bawdy vocal on "Big Butter and Egg Man." Raucous but well arranged, this is cornerstone ensemble music with enormous energy and bright, spirited blasts. --Stuart Broomer

Fact: Some seventy years ago, Louis Armstrong was bigger than the Beatles.
Fact: Louis' record sales provided the seed money for some of today's great communications empires.
Fact: Pops' startling trumpet prowess and ingratiating vocals transformed the phrasing of every instrumentalist and vocalist on earth--and these are the sessions that started it all.
Having performed as the second cornet with spiritual father Joe "King" Oliver's legendary New Orleans band, he turned everybody's head in New York during his stint with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra in 1924. Then at wife Lil Hardin's insistence, he returned to Chicago in 1925, which led to the first of his supersessions for the Okeh label--fronting an all-star band assembled just for the studio. Even amid the traditional New Orleans polyphony and ensemble work of "Gut Bucket Blues," the sheer power of Armstrong's cornet pulls along the rest of the band like a locomotive (and in setting the infectious closing riff, he not only anticipates the swing era but Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts"). By the time we get to the 1926 sessions, featuring his innovative "scat singing" on "Heebie Jeebies" and his dynamic stop-time phrases on "Cornet Chop Suey," Louis Armstrong is well on his way to transforming jazz into a soloist's art, and himself into the most influential musician of the 20th century. --Chip Stern

Louis Armstrong - Plays W.C. Handy [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] (1954)

A wonderful meeting of two institutions of American music, this 1954 album was the finest recording of Louis Armstrong's later career, with the great trumpeter-singer turning to material that was very close to his roots. Both W.C. Handy and Armstrong had a complex relationship with the blues, an essential source for both Handy's popular songs and Armstrong's improvisational art, and these recordings touch on the heart of the matter. On "Yellow Dog Blues," a product of Handy's own early and chance encounter with the rural blues, there's a majesty that recalls Armstrong's early recordings with Bessie Smith. Armstrong is clearly inspired by the classic material and the chance to stretch out on record, and his regular band of the period joins in perfectly. Trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, and singer Velma Middleton contribute stellar solos and support, while bassist Arvell Shaw and drummer Barrett Deems do an exceptional job of keeping the slower tempos rock steady. Shepp, who is also a playwright, brings an immense sense of dramatic gesture to jazz. There is no finer statement of the blues rhetoric than "Backwater Blues" on this CD, and no saxophone notes were ever more dignified, carved out of rock than those on 'St James Infirmary.' The soprano playing (more or less every other track) is also powerful and individual. Horace Parlan (piano) is a marvel of elegant, dignified rhythmic balance, on this as on "Goin' Home," making these two wonderful additions to the jazz duet library. It is great to see these titles on www.Amazon.com, where their absence for several years really made one wonder.

Archie Shepp's best known records could be described as 'important'. This album is not similarly important in a political sense, nor in the sense that it charts new territory for jazz music. It is however a beautiful record.

It's easy to imagine Mr. Shepp and Mr. Parlan playing these songs after a typical fiery gig at four am with chairs on tables as their only audience, aside from a lone broom-wielder. It's a romantic idea, but not any more romantic than the music on this album. Archie Shepp's usual tendency towards pyrotechnics and avant-adventures makes this album's sparce no nonsense treatments of gospel standards that much more fascinating.

While a survey of Mr. Shepp's discography will quickly reveal that he was well versed in all jazz idioms, it's nonetheless remarkable to hear him confining himself to a much earlier set of styles than those which made him (or he made) famous (see Four for Trane, Live in San Fransico, Fire Music). Here it's Ben Webster that comes across as the primary influence (he is more himself -albeit restrained- on soprano), and Mr. Shepp demonstrates that he is very comfortable in this idiom, without sounding derivative.

That Horace Parlan would make a record like this is less surprising, and on some tracks he serves to rein Mr. Shepp in when he seems to be at risk of overstepping the bounds of the traditional songs. This push and pull between the players makes for an interesting record. One that both those who love, and those who can't stand Mr. Shepp's better known records, will find enjoyable.
