This 1960 recording was a landmark album in John Coltrane's career, the first to introduce his quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones and the first release on which he played soprano saxophone. It also provided him with a signature hit, as his new group conception came together wonderfully on the title track. It's an extended modal reworking in 6/4 time that brought the hypnotic pulsating quality of Indian music into jazz for the first time, with Coltrane's soprano wailing over the oscillating piano chords and pulsing drums. The unusual up-tempo version of Gershwin's "Summertime" is a heated example of Coltrane's "sheets of sound" approach to conventional changes, while "But Not for Me" receives a radical harmonic makeover. This is an excellent introduction to Coltrane's work. --Stuart Broomer

The flawless lyricism of Ellis Larkins's piano provides an ideal frame for Ella Fitzgerald's maturing art on the two sessions that make up this CD. The first, from 1950, is an all-Gershwin program, while the second, from 1954, includes songs from other masters of the popular ballad, like Sammy Kahn, Cole Porter, and Hoagy Carmichael. Fitzgerald's voice was an ineffable combination of breadth of sound and lightness of delivery. Larkins's spare and sympathetic settings let her caress each song, and her subtle melodic variations and superb diction make each rendering a musical gem. --Stuart Broomer

Французский трубач Эрик Труффаз один из многочисленных музыкантов обоймы замечательного, ориентированного на разного рода jazz лейбла Blue Note. Пластинки Blue Note весьма частые гости наших обзоров и представлять их всегда приятно. Приятно, потому что это, как правило, либо хорошие типично джазовые пластинки, либо альбомы, демонстрирующие увлекательное новаторство. Truffaz работает на ниве экспериментов по совмещению классического джаза с различными стилями, первое место из которых занимает drum`n`bass. Результатом такого музицирования является и альбом двухлетней давности "Bending New Corners", который Эрику помогали записывать несколько музыкантов, в числе которых Marc Erbetta и вокалист арабского происхождения Nya. Важно отметить, что ничего общего с мелодичным и танцевальным jungle jazz музыка альбома не имеет. Это совсем не easy-слушание, а, в первую очередь, импровизационный, с изрядной долей эмбиента настоящий jazz, правила которого здесь главенствуют и уже потом допускаются привнесенные дополнительные элементы.

Fela Kuti made some frantic albums in his career--ones that popped with his enthusiastic political disobedience and ones that roared with fury at the Nigerian system and Africa's disadvantaged position in the late-20th century. But Coffin for Head of State is a different tiger. It's a downturned, sad, melancholic 22-minute work that signaled how Fela would make his previously general criticisms of Nigerian politics very specific. He recorded the album in 1981, several years after the Nigerian military's destruction of his self-declared Kalakuta Republic (a residential compound, in truth) and the ensuing, relentlessly violent assault on its residents, including his mother, who later died as a result of her injuries. Coffin finds Fela castigating Muslim and Christian leaders for idling while the government raped and pillaged, and it boasts a visionary quality in the antiphonal "Amens" that gets bounced through the band. Filling out this double-length CD is Unknown Soldier, a pointed musical assault on the government's position that "unknown soldiers" had perpetrated the Kalakuta attack, when Fela well knew that the 1,000-man rampage was officially sanctioned. The 30-minute track that comprises Unknown is still Fela in a keyed-down mode, railing against the attackers with his customary electric keyboard, a battery of percussionists, all of it stewing for 15 minutes before he bellows in with bright backing vocal chants. After Coffin's melancholy, this is uplifting enough to make you share in his indignation. These sessions mark an unparalleled peak for the musical display of fury and political criticism. --Andrew Bartlett

One of the toughest jobs in assembling the Jazz artist compilations must have been picking the 21 tracks featured on the Duke Ellington disc. Ellington composed thousands of songs and had a career that spanned six decades. More than a jazz great, Ellington is simply one of the most important musical figures in the 20th century. Surprisingly, all the material here was recorded on or before 1960, which eliminates great later works like the Far East Suite and the sacred concerts. Also missing is the legendary 1956 Newport Jazz Festival performance of "Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue," which was the flashpoint that revitalized a career that had fallen on commercial hard times with the emergence of bebop. Not surprisingly, there are four tracks from the so-called Blanton-Webster era, which was a happy convergence of personnel and Ellington's own muse that led the Ellington band to unsurpassed heights. A bit flawed, this is the briefest of glimpses at a musical galaxy that goes on forever. --Tad Hendrickson
