This is a strange duet album (a Pablo LP reissued on CD in the OJC series). For a set of ten melodies taken from George Gershwin's famous Porgy and Bess, Joe Pass sticks to acoustic guitar while the great pianist Oscar Peterson for the first and only time in his career records exclusively on the clavichord, an instrument from the 1600s that preceded the piano. The clavichord comes across as a mix between a harpsichord and a primitive stringed instrument, and apparently, it cannot be played all that fast. The results are novel at first but rather limited on the whole, making one wonder whose bright idea this was.

Wood is Brian Bromberg's debut for the A440 Music Group, and it is a very strong example of his extraordinary straight-ahead jazz skills as presented in three exciting formats. In addition to the six tracks he performs in a trio setting with drummer David Bromberg and pianist Randy Waldman, Brian Bromberg duets with Waldman on the inimitable "Days of Wine and Roses" and the beautiful tribute "Goodbye (For My Father)," which was previously released on You Know That Feeling. Two amazing solo performances — "Come Together" and "Star Spangled Banner" — add further credence to Bromberg's technical and creative virtuosity as one of the premier jazz bassists of his generation. This set is also remarkable because Brian Bromberg is playing the same upright acoustic bass — a 300-year-old Matteo Guersam, crafted in Milan in the 18th century —- that he used for his professional debut with saxophone legend Stan Getz. Despite its age, the wood (hence the title) emanates rich, mellow sounds that perfectly complement such jazz gems as Miles Davis' "All Blues," Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance," and Thelonious Monk's "Straight No Chaser." Bromberg's tapping method on "Come Together" provides clear and convincing evidence of his mastery of this technique, while his awesome pizzicato chops are burnin' on "Speak Low." Wood is a radical departure from Bromberg's world-renown smooth jazz releases — New Day, Magic Rain, BASSically Speaking, and You Know That Feeling — but nevertheless showcases the exceptional bass techniques that garnered him critical acclaim as one of the 100 best bassists of the 20th century. A definite must have.

JACK I'M MELLOW comes from the 1938 Trixie Smith tune, and if you followed the instructions articulated in the previous track, you should be feeling about the same way we did during the entire recording session! Bliss' rendition of IF YOU'RE A VIPER remains close to the 1938 gem from Bob Howard and His Boys. Bliss sure knows how to kick the gong around! STONEY MONDAY is based on the blues standard Stormy Monday. Steve used to play around with this bloodshot blues number at practice as far back as early 1990. The bong hits have always flown on Friday. WHEN I GET LOW, I GET HIGH was originally recorded by Ella Fitzgerald with Chick Webb and His Orchestra during April 1938. Bliss and the band follow the title's applied wisdom on an almost constant basis! LOTUS BLOSSOM (SWEET MARIJUANA) was originally recorded by Julia Lee and Her Boy Friends during November 1947. This track is sheer Bliss. WILLIE THE RECORD RELEASER is based on the 1927 Ernest Rogers smashed hit Willie the Chimney Sweeper. The lyrics have been autobiographically altered to relate to Willie's new, but equally dirty, career and vices. 1'1 (THIRTEEN INCHES OF FUN) is another twisted old parody from a year or two back. Steve bassed this whacked track on the 1926 classic Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue, penned by Sam Lewis, Joe Young and Ray Henderson. Has anybody seen our bong?!? WEED is a cover of the Bea Foote song that had remained unissued until the REEFER SONGS compilation. All day long indeed. IF YOU'RE A VIPER gets a second treatment complimented by original lyrics penned by Dan, proving he was destined to be a member of Exit-13! The man has gotta be wasted constantly! KNOCKIN' MYSELF OUT was inspired by the 1941 Lil Green number of the same name. At this point in the record we hope you have been knocking yourself out gradually by degrees. HEMPCAKE is just that! SWEET MARIJUANA BROWN, a Barney Bigard Sextet composition, was originally recorded during January 1945. This tune is an intoxicating song about a gal we all love. She's taken all of us in at one time or another. This thirteenth track ID also includes LOADING DOCK, a music experience which cannot be expanded upon, but believe me when I tell you we get our kicks from smoking big fat doobies!!!!

About:

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh was born in Baku, the Capital of Azerbaijan, to musical parents. Her father, Vagif Mustafa Zadeh, a pianist and composer, became famous by creating a fusion between jazz and the traditional Azerbaijani music known as mugam. His wife, Eliza Mustafa Zadeh, was a classically-trained singer from Georgia. As a young child Aziza enjoyed all forms of art - dancing, painting, singing - and at the age of 3 she appeared in public with her father, improvising with voice. But it was her talent for the piano that eventually shone through.

Having studied classical piano from an early age, and despite her enthusiasm for the compositions of JS Bach and Frederic Chopin, she soon began displaying a gift for improvisation. "I didn't practise enough," she admits. "If I don't feel like playing then I don't play." When her father died tragically on stage at the age of 39, it was a shocking blow to the young Aziza, and a major turning point in her life. Her mother's response to the crisis was to give up her own career as a classical singer and dedicate herself to nurturing her daughter's musical gifts. She now acts as her manager, and Aziza has come to rely on her judgment when she's writing or recording new pieces. "I trust her because she's extremely experienced as a classical musician and she had jazz experience with my father," Aziza points out. "And she knows a lot about music and history and literature."

When she was 17, she won the Thelonious Monk piano competition in Washington DC, playing some of Monk's compositions but in her own mugam-influenced style. Around the same time, she moved to Germany with her mother, and concentrated on developing her own distinctive musical direction.

In 1991, she released her debut album, entitled simply Aziza Mustafa Zadeh. It was immediately clear that this was an artist with an unusual and remarkable voice, able to blend her ethnic roots with both classical and jazz inputs. Early favourable impressions were reinforced by 1993's Always, which won Aziza both the ECHO Award and the German Phono Association's Jazz Award. So impressive were her talents that a prestigious squad of jazz musicians chose to join her in the studio for 1995's Dance Of Fire. Many less self-assured artists might have been overawed by a line up comprising guitarist Al Di Meola, bassman Stanley Clarke, former Weather Report drummer Omar Hakim and saxophonist Bill Evans, but once again Aziza produced an album unmistakeably imbued with her particular musical inclinations. 'Aziza is a genius, both as a composer and as a performer. Her music has much more meaning for me than just straight jazz because what I hear is her culture', said Di Meola. 'I hear Azerbaijan.'

With audiences now packing out her live concerts across Europe and beyond, from London and Paris to Istanbul and Tel Aviv, she created a mild frisson of excitement by wearing little more than long tendrils of hair on the sleeve of Seventh Truth (1996). Perhaps this image was designed to mirror the music within, which was mostly stripped down to solo piano and voice. The follow-up, Jazziza, mixed up her own compositions with jazz standards including My Funny Valentine and Dave Brubeck's Take Five.

Now there's Shamans, her first album under a new contract with Decca Records. The disc, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, draws together the varied strands of Aziza's music, brilliantly showcasing her classically-influenced piano playing on Bach Zadeh or Portrait Of Chopin, and giving full rein to her highly personalised vocal technique on compositions such as Ladies Of Azerbaijan or Sweet Sadness. The title piece is an unusual departure for Aziza, using only percussion, the chirruping of a cricket, and multiple overdubs of her own voice to evoke a mystical shadow-world. "For me, the spiritual part of life is the most important," she explains. "Shamans are special people - they can heal you."

Bassist Charles Mingus was always ready for a good fight. In the liner notes to this disc, Mingus says he wanted to respond to critics who said he didn't swing enough. And reply he did. Mingus gave whoever these absurd quibblers were some of the most ecstatic blues ("Moanin'" and "Cryin Blues"), gospel ("Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting"), and Dixieland ("My Jelly Roll Soul") the jazz world has ever heard. Along with his striking original compositions, the instrumental combination in Mingus's nonet remains unconventional: the frontline included four saxophonists and two trombonists without the counterweight of a trumpeter. The leader's sliding-octave bass lines and percussive slaps are totally rollicking, and the wild abandon in the group's playing is irrepressible. --Aaron Cohen
