In the early '90s, Arista Records marketed Candy Dulfer in the much same way it would market a pop or rock singer and did everything it could to exploit the Dutch saxophonist's great looks. Unfortunately, the sexy publicity shots Arista sent out with her debut effort, Saxuality, were more impressive than the album itself - a forgettable R&B/pop/jazz recording that's smothered by excessive production. Though the R&B-ish compositions (many written by producer Ulco Bed) aren't bad, the highly predictable Dulfer consistently comes across as a poor man's David Sanborn and does very little improvising. A funk-influenced version of Miles Davis' "So What" might have been worthwhile, but is destroyed by its stiff production and Dulfer's refusal to improvise. -- Review by Alex Henderson --

While holding on tight to her bossa nova base, Caram ranges further afield in this Chesky outing to other strains of Brazilian music, even somewhat outside the country. Caram expands her palette to include a three piece horn section - Steve Sacks, Al Hunt (reeds), David Sacks (trombone) - from whose versatile hands emerge a pocket-sized big band, a soulful flute choir, and other novel combinations. An occasional cello adds a brooding lyrical element, while an Argentine bandoneon sounds a bit cheesy and sentimental, and Caram herself plays an "electric" guitar with nylon strings - which sounds only slightly more gleaming than an acoustic model. The album's clever title is the name of the title track, Brazil's biggest soccer stadium and an anagram of the singer's own name, though exactly why it reflects Caram's "two sides" as suggested in the packaging remains unclear from the album's contents. While it is a worthwhile experiment, this CD isn't as focused and as attractive as Caram's U.S. debut, Rio After Dark. -- Review by Richard S. Ginell --

Vocalist Stacey Kent may or may not be "the greatest ballad singer in half a century," as her PR claims, but her straightforward renditions of these by-request ballads are not at all generic. What makes them consistently delightful is her unique sound and delivery. There's a certain brassiness, a trumpet-like pointedness, in her voice, as well as a host of endearing idiosyncrasies. Listen to her pronounce the word "idea" in George and Ira Gershwin's "Isn't It a Pity?" Or deliver these remarkable lyrics from the same song: "What joys untasted!/You, reading Heine/Me, somewhere in China." And later, "My nights were sour, spent with Schopenhauer." Kent knows how to make every tune fit her own musical persona. Dreamsville includes a number of seldom-heard gems, particularly "You Are There" by Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg, "You're Looking at Me" by Bobby Troup, and the ever-stunning title track by Henry Mancini. She also presents perennial favorites like "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" and "Thanks for the Memory" (the latter not exactly a ballad). And although this is Kent's hour all the way, her band provides expert backing and more than a few surprises. The singer's husband, Jim Tomlinson, takes a break from tenor sax to play a sumptuous clarinet solo on "Polka Dots." And in the midst of Rodgers & Hart's "Little Girl Blue," pianist David Newton, bassist Simon Thorpe, and drummer Jasper Kviberg fall away, entering again only after Tomlinson and Colin Oxley perform a hushed tenor/guitar duet chorus. -- Review by David R. Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move - Brubeck's record company wasn't keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz's rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond's ubiquitous "Take Five," Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That's a testament to Brubeck and Desmond's abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt - it's just that they're not jarring. Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo а la Turk" blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while "Take Five," despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond's solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello's drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as it's become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it's really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn't just sound sophisticated - it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it's amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. Laura Fygi is part of a new generation of vocalists that followed in the footsteps of legendary stars like Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Julie London. As a young girl Laura took piano lessons, performed in school musicals and school plays and sang background vocals. She lived in Uruguay for a number of years, where she fell in love with South American music and jazz. After her return to Holland, her professional career slowly but surely took off. She joined a number of pop acts, some more successful than others, but finally decided to pursue a solo career.

In 1991, she released her jazzy solo debut Introducing. It became an instant success and Laura even won an Edison award (Dutch Grammy). Internationally the album was received well too. It entered the American Billboard Jazz charts and was very successful in Japan. It was followed in ’92 by Bewitched, featuring tracks from the likes of Nat King Cole, two years later followed by The Lady Wants To Know, which has a more Brazilian feel to it. Laura Fygi again and again surprises her fans by her choice of repertoire.

On Turn Out The Lamplight (’95) she covers modern pop tracks from singers such as Paul Simon, Lionel Ritchie and Stevie Wonder, whereas follow-up Watch What Happens (’97) contains works of the renowned French composer Michel Legrand, who arranges and orchestrates the songs especially for her. Legrand was also a special guest at her amazing concert with the famous Metropole Orchestra at the Amsterdam Carré Theater in 1998. The show was recorded and broadcast in the U.S. by the American TV station PBS. In Holland the show was broadcast by the TROS and the album Live was released. Late ’99 Laura released The Latin Touch, on which she returns to her Latin American roots once again. In 2001 she released Change, a personal album with jazzy, easy listening pop songs, based on Laura’s personal memories.

Laura Fygi at Ronnie Scott’s , Laura’s latest release on Emarcy, is an exceptional album because of its intimate atmosphere and legendary location. ''The great thing about this CD is that it has that particular live feel to it, as if you are there in the bar," says Laura. Contrary to Asia and Brazil, where she sold a large number of albums and tours regularly, she is not very well known in the UK yet. However, the reaction of the audience was extremely positive. After the show she was showered with compliments and requests to come back for more shows. "It is very hard to make it in the UK as a foreign artist; it is not easy to enter the market. But during my shows at Ronnie Scott’s, I felt completely accepted. Besides, it felt great to perform in a small club again, to go back to basics," says Laura. And that is exactly why this CD is a valuable addition to her impressive and diverse repertoire. It proves once again that Laura Fygi is an all-round artist, who feels at home in both spectacularly produced shows and in a smoky jazz café in London.

The focus of the album is the American Songbook genre, of which Laura is very fond and which currently sees a true revival. "I absolutely love this timeless music. Nowadays, everybody – from a veteran like Rod Stewart to a young talent like Robbie Williams – falls back on this genre. In my opinion, this kind of music will always be around, because it is never dull. The excess value of the songs on this album is that, over the last ten years, they have grown and have become part of me," explains Laura.

Any time the likes of Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola and Jean-Luc Ponty are assembled, there is a good chance the results are going to be impressive. Clarke and DiMeola had played together in the legendary Return to Forever, producing some of the most intense playing in all of fusion; Jean-Luc Ponty had also made several excellent, very diverse recordings. The chops of these three musicians are pretty much unsurpassed in the industry, which in itself makes Rite of Strings worthy of a listen. The real treat, however, is in the song selections. Three of DiMeola's more recent compositions are here, including the uplifting "Chilean Pipe Song." On this song, Clarke and Ponty's dual-bow sound provides a nice backdrop to DiMeola's introduction before DiMeola and Ponty state the melody together. Ponty has always been one of the more interesting violinists, mostly because he experiments with the instrument's tonal possibilities. His plucking introduction to "Renassaince" and the strumming on "Change of Life" are evidence of this. Clarke's finest moment comes on his own beautiful "Topanga," on which his bow playing is enough to evoke tears. Rebecca Reneé Olstead (born June 18, 1989) is an American actress and singer.

Olstead was born in Houston, Texas to Christopher Eric Olstead and Rebecca Lynn Jeffries. As a child actress, she made films and commercials from age eight onwards. Since 2002, she has appeared in the TV sitcom Still Standing. She also had a small part in the 2004 film 13 Going on 30. In 2000, at the age of 11, Olstead recorded her first album, Stone Country as well as an EP, Unleashed. Both were privately released on her own record label.

In 2004, Olstead released an eponymous album of jazz songs and pop standards for Warner Brothers Records to good reviews; since her previous releases had limited distribution, this album was considered her true debut. She subsequently performed in Berlin during the Live 8 concert on July 2, 2005. Reportedly her musical talent was discovered by composer David Foster, who produced her 2004 album. She later performed with Foster on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Reneé Olstead is the self-titled major label debut album by teen actress-singer Reneé Olstead, released in 2004. This album differed from Olstead's previous, privately issued country-western releases in that she performs pop and jazz standards. The album, which was co-produced by David Foster, has sold more than 166,000 copies.

Back in 2002, producer David Foster oversaw the debut disc of a young jazz/pop singer named Michael Bublé. With his handsome looks and Sinatra-like voice, Bublé quickly saw his star begin to rise and the success of his disc kicked off a mini-revival of old standards and big band singers. Striking while the iron was hot, Foster fed the flame by introducing an even younger female counterpart to Bublé. Reneé Olstead was a 14-year-old actress mostly known for her co-starring role in the CBS television series Still Standing, but while acting has been her day job since childhood, Olstead has also dabbled in music. Unlike Bublé, who was studying classic songs at a young age with his grandfather, Olstead first latched onto traditional country music and at the age of ten and released Stone Country, which found her singing mediocre tunes in a hiccupped, down-home accent. Four years and a 180-degree turn later, Olstead discovers her inner ingénue with the assistance of Svengali Foster and released her major label debut of pop and jazz standards. The results have the same lovely, glossy sheen that Foster tweaked to perfection on Natalie Cole's Unforgettable album, and Olstead's newfound voice is a vast improvement from her faux twang days. With a voice that is reminiscent of Nicole Kidman's singing debut in Moulin Rouge, Olstead sounds more like a young, bubbly starlet than a newly discovered diva. There is no question that she has a pretty voice and is more than capable of performing undemanding standards like "Taking a Chance on Love," however, her voice lacks the depth and experience truly needed to tackle more difficult song like "Summertime" or "Sunday Kind of Love." In taking on Barry Manilow's "Meet Me, Midnight" she dives in with gusto but ends up barely treading water mid-song with a scat section that sounds uncomfortable and forced. Age is certainly a factor in making these songs sound convincing and, for the most part, Foster smartly chose songs that do not reach too far beyond her young years. This helps to make a song like "Someone to Watch Over Me" sound like a sweet, teenage fairytale. On the other hand, the sensuality of Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis" is far too mature for her to grasp at this time. She does much better on the Norah Jones-styled original "A Love That Lasts" as the song's quiet demeanor compliments Olstead's vocals, making her sound comfortable and natural. It is going to take more time and experience for her to sound as convincing on songs like "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," but Foster has given her a great crash course and that helps to make her debut disc a pleasant listen. It has long been a well-known "secret" that altoist Eric Marienthal, who is best known for his association with Chick Corea's Elektric Band and with his own groups, is a great straight-ahead jazz player, too. He has made occasional guest spots through the years and shown that he is a more versatile player than originally expected. For Got You Covered, Marienthal desired to record a set live in the studio, and he utilized some of his favorite musicians, with guest pianist Chick Corea playing a duet with Marienthal on "My One and Only Love." Unfortunately, Marienthal mostly plays it safe, not digging very far into these songs beyond their melodies. It is pretty unusual getting to hear him play "I've Got the World on a String" and "Moody's Mood for Love," but the latter is a note-for-note re-creation of James Moody's original solo and nothing more. Everything about this set comes across as safe and unadventurous.
