Invisible Giants: Fifty Americans Who Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s):
ISBN: 0195168836
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Year: 2003
Pages: 336

Product Description
History records the accomplishments of individuals. For successive generations of Americans, iconic
figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, and Emily Dickinson have been household
names and role models, inspiring us all by the lessons their lives teach us. But some great Americans,
just as worthy, never attain this recognition. Because history is as fallible as the people who record
it, many of those who shaped the nation and its future have receded from public memory. In celebration
of these lives-and to demonstrate the lasting power history's giants have over their successors-Oxford
University Press recently asked fifty accomplished personalities from a diverse range of industries
and interests to each select a person from the 24-volume American National Biography that they felt deserved
more attention. The biographies of these forgotten figures appear alongside the often-personal comments
of their selectors in Invisible Giants, a varied and lively collection of portraits celebrating history's
forgotten and fading heroes. In Invisible Giants we discover the man who inspired Sherwin Nuland to become
a doctor, the writer Jacques Barzun considers America's first cultural critic, and the woman who taught
Tina Brown to bare her teeth. We learn of the poetry recited to Henry Louis Gates, Jr., as a boy, the magazine
Helen Gurley Brown required every one of her editors to subscribe to, and the book Andy Rooney deems "better
than the Bible and easier to understand." Whether encountering these figures for the first time or uncovering
surprising details in the lives you thought you knew, today's public thinkers guide us on a journey into
the deep folds of our rich biographical tapestry. Edited by Mark Carnes and published with the American
Council of Learned Societies, Invisible Giants introduces one of the nation's most treasured resources--The
American National Biography--to a broad audience by presenting the architects of our country's past
through the eyes of the architects of its future. Invisible Giants includes: James Agee (Sven Birkets)
Jessie Daniel Ames (Alan Brinkley) Rodger Nash Baldwin (Richard Avedon) Bela Bartok (John Simon) Sterling
Brown (Sharon Olds) John Jay Chapman (Jacques Barzun) John England (Andrew Greeley) Oliver Evans (Harold

using a combination of Firebug, and Venkman.
Advanced material explains the most current design practices
for Ajax usability. You'll learn to avoid user experience mistakes with proven design patterns. Beyond
the how-to, Ajax on Rails helps you consider when Ajax is (and isn't) appropriate, and the trade-offs
associated with it. For those new to Rails, this book provides a quick introduction, the big picture,
a walk through the installation process, and some tips on getting started. If you've already started
working with Rails and seek to deepen your skill set, you'll find dozens of examples drawn from real-world
projects, exhaustive reference for every relevant feature, and expert advice on how to "Ajaxify" your
applications.

Excel 2007: The Missing Manual
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Matthew MacDonald
ISBN: 0596527594
Publisher: Pogue Press
Year: 2006
Pages: 856

Product Description
Microsoft Excel continues to grow in power, sophistication, and capability, but one thing that has changed
very little since the early '90s is its user interface. The once-simple toolbar has been packed with so
many features over the years that few users know where to find them all. Microsoft has addressed this problem
in Excel 2007 by radically redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature
easy to locate and use. Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as scant as ever, so even if users
can find advanced features, they probably won't know what to do with them. Excel 2007: The Missing Manual
covers the entire gamut of how to build spreadsheets, add and format information, print reports, create
charts and graphics, and use basic formulas and functions. Like its siblings in the Missing Manual series,
this book crackles with a fine sense of humor and refreshing objectivity about its subject, guiding readers
through the new Excel with clear explanations, step-by-step instructions, lots of illustrations,
and friendly, time-saving advice. It's a perfect primer for small businesses with no techie to turn to,
as well as those who want to organize household and office information.

The PEAR Installer Manifesto
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Greg, Beaver
ISBN: 1904811191
Publisher: Packt Publishing
Year: 2006
Pages: 296

Product Description
The creator of this powerful and multi-faceted code management and deployment system shows you how to
unleash its hidden power across your complete PHP development lifecycle. PEAR Installer is the preferred
PEAR package for installing PEAR packages. It can be used to make sure that the most up to date version of
a package is present on your server. This book reveals the full power of the PEAR Installer, presenting
a new way of organizing your PHP application development and deployment. This book will show you a new
way of organizing your PHP development, by leveraging the full power of the PEAR Installer. In a sense,
the PEAR Installer is a step above a software design pattern, a meta-development pattern that can be used
to systematically organize all of your PHP development. You will learn how to organize your code into
packages using the package.xml format. You will learn about the revolutionary new PEAR Channel concept,
and how to safely and reliably depend on external PHP libraries from sources such as pear.php.net and
other PEAR channels. You will learn about the PEAR_PackageFileManager package, and how to customize
individual installations of your PHP code through file roles, file tasks, and post-installation scripts.
In addition, you will learn how to use the power of PEAR to manage your web projects with the PEAR installer
to bring the power of versioning and rollbacks to your live website. The synergy of the PEAR Installer
and a revision control system like CVS or Subversion is also explored in depth. Next, you will learn how
to set up your own PEAR Channel for distributing PHP applications, both open-source and proprietary
closed-source PHP applications that can be secured using technology already built into the PEAR Installer.
Finally, you will learn how to embed the PEAR Installer inside your own web application in order to manage
plug-ins from a remote server. The book covers in detail designing a custom plug-in system for a fictitious
blog application. The plug-in system is used to manage templates, and the PEAR Installer is used to manage
the details of querying the remote server for templates, handling dependencies between versioning,
and doing the actual installation process as well. This book is a comprehensive and well structured tutorial
on using PEAR Installer, but it is also much more than that. As the creator of the PEAR Installer Libraries,
the author is passionate about the benefits of a well managed development and deployment process. The
book shows how PEAR Installer works in detail, and then takes you through a comprehensive tour of how you
can apply it all stages of the development lifecycle, with practical examples and advice throughout.
It will build your technical skills and understanding, and also widen your perspective on managing an
effective development process. The book is not just for PHP developers who want to understand how the
PEAR Installer works, and what it can do for them, but more generally for PHP developers seeking a better
way to deploy their applications and manage updates. It does assume that you have a good working knowledge
of PHP development, and are dealing with projects of a sufficient scale and complexity to warrant an investment
in a structure process.

First Principles

Product Details
Author(s): Don Foy
ISBN: 0875862586
Publisher: Algora Publishing
Year: 2003
Pages: 172

Product Description
FIRST PRINCIPLES examines the flaws and broken promises of modernism, and hopes for renewal in traditionalism.
The central spiritual conflict of our time is the struggle between modernism and traditionalism, and
the debate over which should be our guide. Many modern conflicts appear intractable because they are
hotspots in a larger cold war between entirely different frames of reference. Only by unearthing and
examining the divergent frames can we begin to se e which will work better for us. "Thy will be done" versus
"My will be done": according to First Principles, modernism and traditionalism differ principally
in where they locate the source of values. Modernism believes in an internal, subjective source; it appeals
to the ego, and its promises have captured the popular imagination; but its actual practice reveals its
destructiveness. Traditionalism believes in an external, objective source: "God" (or gods). Traditionalism
is not about traditions, per se - preserving old ways or keeping old rituals - but about dedicating ourselves
to Objective Reality's plan.

Access 2007: The Missing Manual
Amazon

Product Details
Author(s): Matthew MacDonald
ISBN: 0596527608
Publisher: Pogue Press
Year: 2006
Pages: 751

Product Description
Compared to industrial-strength database products such as Microsoft's SQL Server, Access is a breeze
to use. It runs on PCs rather than servers and is ideal for small- to mid-sized businesses and households.
But Access is still intimidating to learn. It doesn't help that each new version crammed in yet another
set of features; so many, in fact, that even the pros don't know where to find them all. Access 2007 breaks
this pattern with some of the most dramatic changes users have seen since Office 95. Most obvious is the
thoroughly redesigned user interface, with its tabbed toolbar (or "Ribbon") that makes features easy
to locate and use. The features list also includes several long-awaited changes. One thing that hasn't
improved is Microsoft's documentation. To learn the ins and outs of all the features in Access 2007, Microsoft
merely offers online help. Access 2007: The Missing Manual was written from the ground up for this redesigned
application. You will learn how to design complete databases, maintain them, search for valuable nuggets
of information, and build attractive forms for quick-and-easy data entry. You'll even delve into the
black art of Access programming (including macros and Visual Basic), and pick up valuable tricks and
techniques to automate common tasks -- even if you've never touched a line of code before. You will also
learn all about the new prebuilt databases you can customize to fit your needs, and how the new complex
data feature will simplify your life. With plenty of downloadable examples, this objective and witty
book will turn an Access neophyte into a true master.

Like every other application in Microsoft Office suite, PowerPoint is loaded with features. So many,
in fact, that even veterans don't know where to find them all. Microsoft solved this problem in PowerPoint
2007 by redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes features easy to locate and use.
PowerPoint 2007 also boasts improved graphics, additional templates, the ability to save custom layouts,
and improved collaboration through SharePoint. One thing Microsoft hasn't improved is its poor documentation.
To learn the ins and outs of all the features in PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft merely offers online help.
If you're familiar with previous versions of the program, you may be lost the first time you fire up the
new PowerPoint; or you would be if it weren't for PowerPoint 2007: The Missing Manual. This new book, written
specifically for this version of the software, not only offers the basics of how to create, save, set up,
run, and print a basic bullets-and-background slideshow, but takes you into the world of multimedia,
animation, and interactivity. You'll learn how to add pictures, sound, video, animated effects, and
controls (buttons and links) to their slides, along with ways to pull text, spreadsheets, and animations
created in other programs. You can also create your own reusable design templates and learn to automate
repetitive tasks with macros. Learn how to take advantage of advanced functions (such as adding custom
background images) that existed in previous PowerPoint versions, but were so cleverly hidden that few
people ever found them.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Advance Administration.

Заранее благодарю.
