Vodjani was born in Persia in 1954 and nowadays works from his OM Studio in Hamburg, Germany. He has travelled many countries and is fascinated by Oriental music and culture. His first major album Karmapa was released in 1996 under the name Sijano Vodjani and was co-produced by Oliver Shanti and published by Sattva Records. It is a beautiful recording that features samples of prayers spoken by the 16th Karmapa who had died in 1981. If you enjoyed any of Shanti's albums, especially his Tai Chi series, you should enjoy Vodjani's debut. In 1998 the album Sacred Buddha was released under the name Sina Vodjani, and this time distributed and published by Music Alliance AG in Germany. The album does signify a slight change in style from his first album (most likely due to Shanti not being present as producer). For his second album, Vodjani specially travelled to Tibet to meet the young 17th Karmapa and record his voice live. It is an album that combines very ambient arrangements, with the occasional trance-like basslines, subdued techno beats and Mongolian-style chants. Om Mani Padme Hung is a gentle, dreamy song with breathtakingly beautiful female singing, accompanied by high piano notes; eventually bringing in a much deeper bass rhythm and harsh, spoken words serving a great contrast. Milarepa features a deep, guttural Buddhist chant-speech accompanied by New-Agey synths and distant, electric guitar. Wisdom of Love features a lonesome pipe playing, with heavy drums and a throbbing bassline with speech. The most enjoyable track is the opening Straight to the Heart which features the Karmapa's spoken vocals atop faint electronica, flamenco-style guitar playing and then eventually a very syncopated piano rhythm. This album is a voyage into these villages and lands of the East.

Dean Evenson & Li Xiangting - Tao Of Healing

Part of the Sound Healing series from Soundings of the Planet, Tao of Healing teams flautist Dean Evenson with Li Xiangting, a professor from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and an authority on the guqin, an ancient seven-string zither from China. Their collaboration, with barely perceptible support from keyboards, acoustic guitar (Scott Huckabay) and percussion, is a hushed, serene, and inviting experience--as soft as the faintest breeze felt on a peaceful, sun-warmed afternoon.

Evenson's meditative flute, which rarely strays from the instrument's comfortable low and middle ranges, is the disc's prevailing voice, with Xiangting's guqin discreetly supplying tasteful, angular accents to complement the Western vibe of Evenson's reflective improvisations. At times, in fact, this calming, slow-go disc (60 minutes in length) briefly conveys traces of jazzlike harmonics (largely Huckabay's contribution) that flavors the blissful proceedings with a nice touch of musicality.

A slight soundalike quality might be detected in some tracks, but this is a minor quibble. This is Evenson's first recording where natural sounds are not included, though the liner notes assert the mix makes use of "earth resonance frequency" (7.8 hertz), all to enhance a listener's attainment of an alpha state. Actually, Evenson, Xiangting, and company do a commendable job of that on their own. A strong choice for supplementing massage or meditation. ~Terry Wood

Теперь мы подошли к работе Serrie 'Spirit Keepers' ('Хранители духа'), появившийся на свет в 1998 году. Он тоже удивляет. Его можно назвать опытами в жанре ambient, хотя это и не совсем верно. На альбоме Serrie сплавил воедино new age, space и ambient с этнической музыкой коренных американцев. Сейчас этим никого не удивишь: использовать индейскую музыку или, по крайней мере, отдельные ее элементы стало очень модно. Причем это происходит в самых разных жанрах, не обязательно в ньюэйдже. (Но, кстати, именно в ньюэйдж-музыке в последнее время появилось много проектов с использованием индейских мотивов.) Впрочем, 'Spirit Keepers' не стал неким откровением или чем-то совсем уж нетрадиционным - его достоинства в другом. Serrie все сделал очень по-своему. Синтезаторами он трансформировал мелодии так, что 'Spirit Keepers' можно назвать 'музыкой космических индейцев' или музыкой духовных существ, пришедших на Землю откуда-то из глубин Космоса, из других миров и оставшихся здесь. Мы слышим в этих мелодиях голос древней прародины человечества, и память о ней не дает нам уснуть, подобно эльфам из трилогии Толкиена 'Властелин колец', - хочется смотреть и смотреть со светлой грустью вдаль, в бескрайнее небо с надеждой увидеть ту самую звезду...

Вернемся от поэзии к особенностям музыки 'Spirit Keepers', тем более, что она исходит в Космос от самых корней, потаенных глубин матери-Земли. Хочу сказать здесь, что у Serrie были отличные помощники - коренные индейцы, сыгравшие партии на живых инструментах. Это декламатор, флейтист и перкуссионист 'Зимний Ястреб' Джон Джонсон (John 'Winterhawk' Johnson), а также вокалист и перкуссионист 'Голубой Волк' Том Гудман (Tom 'Blue Wolf' Goodman). В звучании альбома ощущается некая гипнотичность, наверное, потому, что 'Зимний Ястреб' у себя в племени creek, что проживают в Алабаме, всего-навсего 'обыкновенный' шаман и духовный лидер, а 'Голубой Волк' - народный сказитель и учитель индейских обычаев. Надо сказать, что встреча с этими людьми произошла в 1996 году, когда Jonn’ отправился в долину Nacoochee, чтобы записать там природные звуки. Еще одной особенностью музыки 'Spirit Keepers' стала обнаженность и чистота первобытного человека, стоящего лицом к лицу перед силами Природы. Такой вот он - всегда непредсказуемый в своем творчестве Jonn’ Serrie.
