...в 1995-ом, состоялся релиз потрясающего и самого неподражаемого альбома Banco de Gaia "Last Train To Lhasa" – "Последний поезд в Лхасу". Последний поезд, как много в этом слове... Особенно учитывая, что в Лхасу – столицу Тибета – поезда не ходят. Поэтому в данном случае даже не столь важно, последний это поезд или первый. Это действительно незабываемая музыка, заставляющая оглянуться на мир и заглянуть в самого себя, почувствовать связь с природой и с далеким Тибетом. Пусть даже Вы там никогда и не были.
Альбом написан после посещения Тоби Марксом этой красивейшей азиатской местности, богатой культурными и религиозными традициями. Нетрудно представить, насколько красива и интересна эта работа. Первый диск как будто описывает смену ваших ощущений во время пребывания в Китае. Начиная с поездки на паровозе и заканчивая совершенно небесной структурой, которая уволакивает и растворяет вас в необъятных просторах ваших мыслей. Особенно хочется отметить поразительную по своей структуре "колыбельную" со 2 диска, которая длится без малого 36 минут...

Synthesist Jonn Serrie has always traversed a spectrum between deep space excursions and sentimental pop melodies. He charts a similar course on Lumia Nights, creating ambient lounge music full of breathy synthesizer pads and cocktail-bar-at-midnight moods. He even covers the jazz standard, "Autumn Leaves" to cloyingly bad effect. Just think Lawrence Welk plugged in. The lounge rhythms are offered up with none of the irony you might find in electronica artists such as Thievery Corporation or Loop Guru, whose grooves call up an iconography that's twisted on its head. It's not until "Deep Mystery" that Serrie floats off into the night sky with shimmering synthesizer textures that recall some of his Planetary Chronicles recordings, but even here, the synthesist goes for melodies that exhibit more saccharine than soul. ~ John Diliberto

Уверен, что для большинства любителей джазовой музыки на пост-советском пространстве понятия "Китай" и "джаз" пересекались лишь в связи с шанхайским периодом деятельности оркестра Олега Лундстрема. И вот первая (для автора этих строк) встреча с китайским джазовым коллективом. Правда, состав "Celestial" из Гонконга можно назвать джазовым, а кстати, и китайским, лишь с определенной долей условности.

Увы, фирма "Domo Records" не балует покупателей своих CD обилием информации. Во вкладыше к представляемому первому альбому "Celestial" указаны только названия композиций (причем без хронометража),их автор и музыканты, солирующие в данной пьесе. Даже состав группы, в сущности, остается за кадром. Однако, судя по солистам, в ней представлены не только китайцы, но и англосаксы, и индусы. Это к вопросу об относительности прилагательного "китайский". Теперь о "джазовости" услышанного. Точную дефиницию этой музыки дать довольно сложно и удобнее определить ее как электронный вариант world music. Фундаментом практически всех композиций (автор и аранжировщик — Питер Милуорд (Peter Millward))является предельно компьютеризованное звучание клавишных и ударных с частыми врезками обработанных электроникой же голосов. На этом фоне идет "экзотика" — солирующие инструменты, преимущественно азиатского происхождения. Особенно эффектно выглядит тембр китайского двухструнного смычкового инструмента эрху (Син Сяохун (Hsin Hsiaj Hung)), напоминающий пение фальцетом (например,в пьесах "The Last Gong Before Sailing" или "Vang Ding").В композиции "Nepal" доминируют ситар (Биджайя — Bijaya Vaidya), флейта (Прем Рана — Prem Rana) и табла (Сурендра Шрестха — Surendra Shrestha). Соединяются эти две столь непохожие тенденции довольно прямолинейно, в лоб (в Европе и Америке это проходили уже лет 15—20 назад). Лишь в "Trans-MongolianExpress" подобная стыковка кажется более органичной. Там же, где "Celestial" убирает экзотические тембры, гитара Юджина Пао (Eugene Pao) в "Life'sGreatest Tragedy" или вокал Риты Цян (Rita Tsang) в "I Feel Strange" звучат не слишком убедительно.

Любопытный альбом — так бы я резюмировал впечатления от "Spirit House" и именно в таком качестве и рекомендую его нашим читателям.
